Can we specify a maxlength for a textarea field, like we can for a text input?

Hi Lewis,

Max length is not a supported HTML attribute (hence it is not there in Couch too).
If you wish, however, you can try imposing the limit using JavaScript - use editable region type 'message' to inject the JS code in the edit panel.
