In addition to checking the permissions on the upload folder step, I'd recommend taking a look at 'kfunctions.php' and 'config.php' files. These files are user-configurable and, I have seen this happen several times, while editing them users put in a space before the opening <?php etc. which breaks the XML.
As far as I know, it is compatible.
