From what I could gather from StackOverflow if indeed it is a line-ending problem, if you are on Windows you can try using Notepad++ and saving the .htaccess file using 'Edit' -> 'EOL Conversion' ->'UNIX/OSX Format'.
That said, perhaps your host would be able to help you in a more meaningful manner with this issue. Ask them if they can give you a sample .htaccess file that is known to work on their servers.
